It is written that the first candles were developed by the Ancient Egyptians who used rushlights, or torches, made by soaking the pithy core of reeds in molten tallow. The rushlights had no wick like a candle. The Romans are credited with developing the wick candle using it to aid travelers at dark and lighting homes and places of worship at night.

Colonial women offered America's first contribution to candle making. They discovered that boiling the grayish green berries of bayberry brushes produced sweet smelling wax that burned clean. Extracting the wax from the bayberries was extremely tedious and the popularity of bayberry candles diminished.

The growth of the whaling industry in the 18th century brought the first major change in candle making since the middle ages when spermaceti, a wax obtained by crystallizing sperm whale oil, became available in quantity. The spermaceti wax didn't emit an unpleasant smell and the wax was hard enough to hold shape in the hot summer months.

The 19th century was a defining time for candles and candle making when the first patented candle making machines were introduced. It was also a time when a chemist named Michael Eugene Chevreul identified that animal fat consisted of a fatty acid called stearine. These discoveries drastically improved the quality of candles.

The braided wick was also invented in the 19th century and paraffin wax was first used.

Today, candles are no longer a major source of light, but continue to grow in popularity and use. They are offered in a variety of colors, shapes, designs, and fragrances. Candles symbolize celebration, mark romance, define ceremony, and accent decor, while casting the same warm and enjoyable glow.

Soy Wax

I love how easy it is to use soy wax. There are many advantages to using this type of wax. The following are some of the benefits.

Soy wax is all natural. It is made form 100% soybean wax, biodegradable, and a renewable source.

Soy candles last longer. They burn cooler and slower.

Soy wax spills are easy to clean.

Soy candles produce less soot and they don't emit toxins while burning.

Soy wax produces a cleaner burning candle that is environmentally safe and longer lasting. I hope you enjoy the benefits as much as I do.

Soy Candles

I have always had a passion for candles and the many different fragrances available, so a few years ago I took a class to learn how to make soy candles.
